Kick Up Futsal Case Study

Final-year project: a multi-role futsal booking and venue management platform with dedicated player, manager, and administrator dashboards built with Laravel and PostgreSQL.

Situation

In urban areas across Nepal, futsal has exploded in popularity. However, court reservations remained largely manual—managed through phone calls, paper notebooks, and informal messaging. This resulted in frequent double-bookings, conflicting schedules, lack of booking transparency for players, and administrative headaches for facility operators managing peak weekend hours.

Task

As my final-year BSc (Hons) Computing capstone project for London Metropolitan University, I designed and developed Kick Up Futsal:

  1. An automated, real-time court reservation system preventing race conditions and double-bookings.
  2. A strict multi-tier Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) hierarchy for Players, Court Managers, and System Admins.
  3. Clean reporting dashboards showing daily court occupancy, revenue, and historical utilization metrics.
  4. Comprehensive API and business logic verification under high concurrency.

Action

I engineered the platform using PHP, Laravel, and PostgreSQL:

  • Concurrency & Transaction Safety: Wrapped booking operations in PostgreSQL database transactions with pessimistic locking (SELECT ... FOR UPDATE), mathematically eliminating double-bookings when multiple players attempt to book the same slot simultaneously.
  • Role-Based Architecture: Implemented custom Laravel middleware and policies to enforce separation between player bookings, manager court availability controls, and system-wide admin oversight.
  • RESTful API Contracts: Designed consistent JSON API response envelopes, input validation requests, and error handling layers adhering to modern API design principles.
  • Relational Data Modeling: Structured a 3NF normalized schema in PostgreSQL covering users, venues, courts, time slots, pricing rules, and payments.

Result

  • Academic Distinction: Received high marks and positive external examiner review for technical architecture and software engineering rigor.
  • Reliability: Successfully passed simulated concurrent load tests without a single overlapping reservation.
  • Production Grounding: Served as the foundation for practical backend engineering practices carried directly into production Laravel codebases at Shangrila Microsystem.
  • Source Code: Fully documented and available on GitHub.
